A Study on Flower-Shaped Rooftop Wind Turbines and Prospects in Bangladesh

Abstract

Bangladesh is experiencing rapid urbanization and an increasing demand for electricity. Due to growing environmental concerns and limitations of conventional power generation, renewable energy solutions are becoming essential. One promising approach is the application of flower shaped rooftop wind turbines, compact and efficient vertical-axis wind energy systems designed to operate effectively under low to moderate urban wind conditions.

This study evaluates wind characteristics in three coastal regions of Bangladesh: Kutubdia, Satkhira, and Mongla. Wind velocity distribution, wind direction analysis using wind rose diagrams, and seasonal variations were examined to assess energy potential. Theoretical models, including Momentum Theory, Blade Element Theory (BET), Blade Element Momentum (BEM) Theory, and Betz’s Law, were applied to analyze turbine performance and energy conversion efficiency. Power output calculations were performed for Tulip-type and Petal-blade Savonius turbines. The technological, environmental, economic, and social feasibility of rooftop wind systems in Bangladesh is also evaluated.
